The word earthquake means the shaking of the ground. The study of earthquakes is called seismology. Earthquakes normally occur along the edges of tectonic plate boundaries. Deformation is the bending, tilting, and breaking of the earth's crust.When a deformed rock is suddenly returned back to its original shape it is called elastic rebound. A seismic wave is a wave that travels through the Earth. A seismograph is a instrument that locates seismic waves. A seismogram is the tracing of an earthquakes motion. An epicenter is the point directly above an earthquake's starting point, which is the focus. There are buildings that are made to with stand an earthquake. The mass damper, cross brass, active tendon system, flexible pipes, and base isolators. Also a earthquake an never be predicted.
